A Drawing

I've been squeezing some personal work into my schedule recently. Here's a drawing for now, I will share some oil paintings soon. Probably.

Legend of the Cryptids work

I was asked to paint a kind of 'God of Darkness'. As I was sketching it occurred to me that the 'darkness' itself might initially take on physical form, so there's dark smoke and dark liquid coming from him.

More Galaxy Saga work

I really enjoyed the idea of the living sword here. The first 'Normal' version is set in a kind of futuristic Dojo, where the character has learned how to use and work with the creature-sword. The second 'Advanced' image shows her on the hunt ( for the Pirate in the previous post as it happens).

I did a shoot with the lovely Liv Free  to get the reference images I needed for this character. You can see more of Liv Free on Facebook

Space Pirate

Here's a space pirate and his cronies. After disembarking their ship they are on their way into the space port to mingle with the other scum of the universe. The floating robot sits in for the traditional parrot-on-the-shoulder.

MtG Gatecrash

A recently released image from the 'Gatecrash' set of Magic the Gathering. Terrific fun to do. Some action, lighting and material effects, reflective surfaces and a little design work on the Golem. All things that I enjoy very much.

Quite a few people have mentioned that they like the fire in this. I did enjoy painting it, it was a challenge. I found some images of Flamethrowers that helped immensely.

An update!

Since the summer of 2012 I've been working with Applibot on 'Legend of the Cryptids' and now 'Galaxy Saga'. The work has been particularly fun as I get to design everything. I do get a brief description for the characters, but they have very much encouraged me to expand upon and embellish the ideas. I get to design the characters, costumes, weapons etc and I can also come up with whatever story idea might fit each one. The illustrations come in sets of 2, a 'Normal' and 'Advanced' version. It's been fun finding ways to connect the two.

If you follow me on Facebook then this stuff will be familiar. I didn't think it would hurt to post them here though and give this blog a much needed bit of attention.

Preacher - oil painting

Preacher - Oil on canvas panel, 16" x 20"

I've wanted to do one of my demon characters in oils for a while. A sketch popped out in Photoshop not too long ago and it presented me with a straight forward idea for a traditional painting. As it's basically a portrait I knew it would not take as long as a multi-figured scene and I knew I could steal enough time away from my commercial work to get it done in a reasonable time frame. If I added up all the sessions on it I think it took around 5 days to complete.
