I just found out that my last Heavy Metal magazine cover was nominated for a Chesley.
I'm a little surprised, it being a picture of a half naked sci-fi babe, but I'm glad it caught someones eye anyway.

Warcraft TCG work

First off, how can we be at the end of January already?!? Crikey.

Here are a few bits from the Warcraft TCG then. I have more to come next month.

The last of the 3 images was done in oils, it was the first commercial art I'd done traditionally in quite a few years. I did a digital rough for it as usual and once that was approved I printed it out and divided the drawing into a simple 4 part grid to help with general placement as I started drawing it out on the board. I almost f'd the thing up when I came to seal the drawing with clear gesso. As I applied the gesso the drawing was almost washed away. I could basically see enough of it though to continue on. Out of interest, here's an in progress shot:

It's really been a fab year for me. I've worked with some great people on some really fun stuff. I'm excited about 2011:)

I hope everyone enjoys the holidays and I wish you success and happiness for the new year.

I do have work from other projects to post, but as always I need to wait for publication. The folks at Sony Online seem to get the PoxNora images out there quicker than most, so here's some more of that..

My favourites of this batch.

Out of interest, it was around the time I did these that I started shooting my own figure reference. I hired a model and shot poses for all of the female figures here ( including the statue in that night time scene). I have since been thinking a lot more about exactly where photo reference belongs in my work. It is invaluable at times, but it can also start dictating a little too much if I'm not careful. Still, an interesting process and something I will continue with.

Once again, really fun stuff to work on. I'd love to take a stab at another 'Necrotic Ooze' piece. I'm not sure how often I'm going to be asked to do that kind of thing though. Maybe I should do a 'The Blob' painting, that would be cool!

This is an old piece from around 2004. For me, one of those occasions where I prefer the drawing to the final painting:) Still, it was fun to do. The oil painting is 8"x10" on canvas panel, it was sold at the La Luz de Jesus gallery. They hold an annual 'Everything But the Kitschen Sync' group show, definitely worth a look.
